Archaeology and interdisciplinarity: archaeological and historical re research on interdisciplinarity in the History of Spanish archaeology (19th and 20th centuries)

Research project MINECO-Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad,  ref. HAR2016-80271-P

The project “Archaeology and interdisciplinarity: archaeological and historical re research on interdisciplinarity in the History of Spanish archaeology (19th and 20th centuries)” (Inter-Arq) aims to analyse interdisciplinary relationships between archeology and other branches of knowledge over the last two centuries. It also looks into the resulting social impact of such a connection. The sciences from which archaeology borrowed practices and methodologies cover a wide range of disciplines, from the purest science (physics), to environmental sciences (geology, biology), to those in humanities such as history, art history or philology. For social impact the project will explore the connections with journalism and other media specialists and also with school teaching. Interdisciplinary connections were crucial to the development of this science but, despite this, its role has been largely ignored in the vast majority of the histories of archaeology. This is a pioneering project that seeks to make an ambitious joint work of comparative nature, in which the Actor-Network theories (Latour 1992) and of appropriation (Sanders 2006) wll serve as a theoretical guide.
The specific objectives of INTER-ARQ are divided into research, methodology, dissemination and training. Regarding research, each team member will consider specific issues related to their specialization, trying to distinguish between degrees of interdisciplinarity, gender relations, encounters through conferences, media used for the transmission of knowledge, diachronic changes throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, exploring the new practices that marked this cross-fertilization between disciplines.
The methodology followed is divided into project meetings which will be combined with training in oral history; criticism of documentary sources; work in archives; and the conducting interviews with scientists who have shaped the last link in this story we want to explore. Regarding INTER-ARQ public outreach the following has been planned: an exhibition, attendance to international conferences (EAA, UISPP and SAA), organization by the project of a congress in Spain in 2019, three activities in museums and schools and a web page.
